Should I just risk it and not get insurance?

Insurance is a grudge purchase, but given the awful record of rental companies and their long history of overinflating repair costs and their fictions and frauds about damages, we highly recommmend that you take out insurance. This FAQ explains why you shouldn't purchase the rental company's excess waivers (it's mainly because they are double the price of RentalCover.com and there are hidden exclusions everywhere).

What happens if I don't buy the rental company's excess waiver and if I don't have an "independent" policy from RentalCover.com or similar?

If there's damages (and sometimes when there's not), your credit card will be charged for an amount up to the "excess" on your vehicle. It can exceed 5,000€/US$5,000 depending on the rental company.

The deduction can be the full excess even when the cost of repairs might be minimal. Here's why...

If you have an accident the rental company will deduct the full excess. We don't have a problem with this - they need the money to pay for repairs. Most accidents do not lead to the rental vehicle being "written off" ("totalled") so there should be a refund of the difference between the excess (which might be up to say, $5000) and the repair cost (usually under $1000 for accidents involving two cars). If there's no other vehicles involved you will get your money back quickly but if there's more than one vehicle its a different story.

Read this FAQ for more information on "at fault" claims.
