What to do if your car breaks down

If your car stops working the first thing you need to do is make sure everyone is safe. Where possible pull over, turn on your hazard lights and get everyone to safety.

After this contact your rental company to let them know what has happened. Do not arrange your own recovery or repair without the rental company’s knowledge as this may invalidate their rental terms and conditions. Charges for towing and vehicle relocation are covered by RentalCover.com policies. We do not cover “out of pocket” costs such as accommodation or phone calls.

Choose your vehicle

Car

This includes cover for vehicles with fewer than nine seats, including the driver’s seat. If you are planning on driving on unsealed roads in accordance with the permissions set out in your rental agreement, add 4x4 cover via the My Account page. Lastly, if you are planning on renting a speciality, vintage or exotic car please contact us to check whether we offer insurance for your trip.

4x4

Going off road? Then select this policy. It covers you for any vehicle that you plan to drive on unsealed roads in accordance with the permissions set out in your rental agreement. The 4x4 policy can be purchased for 4x4s, and added via the My Account page to campervan and motorhome policies.

Campervan

Does it have two or more in-built sleeping berths and no in-built shower or toilet? If so it’s a campervan. If you are planning on driving on unsealed roads in accordance with the permissions set out in your rental agreement, add 4x4 cover via the My Account page.

Motorhome / RV

Select this if your vehicle has a built-in shower and / or toilet. If you are planning on driving on unsealed roads in accordance with the permissions set out in your rental agreement, add 4x4 cover via the My Account page.

Minibus

Group trip? Select minibus if your vehicle has between nine and 14 seats, including the driver’s seat.

If you are told by the rental company that they “don’t recognise” your RentalCover.com policy, don’t worry: They don’t need to! Our policies are an independent alternative to the rental company’s waivers and they are valid worldwide. They have no hidden exclusions and are 50% cheaper than the rental company’s waivers. If your rental company refuses to give you a vehicle we recommend speaking to your rental booking agent.

2. Be prepared

Have all required documents ready for your check-in and take a look at your country’s Rental Guide so you know what to expect at the rental desk.

Excess deductible

This is the maximum you will pay for a claim before your Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) comes into play. In the event of an accident you are liable to pay up to the full excess deductible amount, and your CDW insurance will pay the rest. For example, if your car is worth $10000 and your excess deductible is capped at $3000, you would pay up to $3000 and the rental company’s insurance would pay the rest. You can purchase additional protection from RentalCover.com which reduces your excess / deductible costs to $0.

Collision Damage Waiver (CDW)

CDW and LDW is usually included in the rental rate that you see on a website. Note that these “waivers” just reduce your risk from a high amount (similar to the full value of the car) to somewhere between $1500 and $3000 depending on the car and the rental company.

✗ Without CDW

If you have an accident you may be responsible for the full cost of your rental, in additional to any towing and administrative charges incurred due to loss of use while the vehicle is off the road.

✓ With CDW

If you have an accident you will only pay up to the deductible excess amount on the vehicle. Many rental company CDW policies typically exclude windscreen and tyre repairs/replacements, as well as undercarriage, roof, interior, window and side mirror damages. However, if you have purchased RentalCover.com’s Full Cover product we not only reduce your excess deductible to $0, but also include protection for all the items that these policies don’t protect you for.

If you have this insurance we will take on the responsibility for refunding your deductible excess in the event that you need to make a claim, effectively reducing the amount to $0. All RentalCover.com policies include zero excess as standard.

In the event of breakdown or an accident, it is important that you follow these steps:

1. Contact your rental company{% if Agent.Name|default %}, {{Agent.Name}}{% else %}{% endif %} to report the incident. You can find their number on the rental agreement you signed when collecting your vehicle. Keep that rental agreement as you will need it for your claim.

2. We recommend taking photos to document damage to your vehicle and any other vehicles.

3. After following the rental company's instructions, and once your rental period is over, and once the final charges have been settled by the rental company, submit a claim with RentalCover.com. We will keep you updated by email at every step of the claims journey. You will need these documents. Our aim is to complete 95% of claims within 3 days.

To help our team assess your claim as quickly as possible we ask all customers to provide the following documents using our online claims form:

> What is this?
The signed contract provided by your rental company when you picked up your vehicle.

> Why is it needed?
To confirm eligibility for yourself and additional drivers. It also includes the rental dates, the rental terms and the maximum amount that can be charged by the rental company.

> What is this?
The licence that you used to rent the vehicle.

> Why is it needed?
To confirm your identity matches the details on your rental agreement, and that you held a valid licence at the time of the rental.

 

> What is this?
A card statement that displays the amount you paid to the rental company, and any refund you may have received (refunds often occur if the full deductible excess was charged initially and the final damage cost was less than the amount that you paid).

> Why is it needed?
To verify that the payment has been made and to prevent fraudulent claims.

> What is this?
Any email or letters you have exchanged with the rental company following your accident.

> Why is it needed?
This information can save us time when assessing your claim request.

> What is this?
In the event of an accident or damage, some rental companies will charge you the full deductible excess applicable for the car, and later they will refund you. Alternatively they may just charge you an amount for damages that is less than the full deductible excess. Either way, we require you to provide the final invoice that clearly shows the final amount that you’ve been charged (learn more here).

> Why is it needed?
We need this document to pay your claim as it confirms the final amount you have been charged.

> What is this?
This is the report created by the police and includes information about your accident, including any witness statements, summary of the damage and also driver and passenger details.

> Why is it needed?
This document confirms the circumstances of more serious accidents, and any charges that have been issued by the police to those involved. If your claim becomes a legal matter this report can be invaluable. You can obtain this document by contacting the local law enforcement agency.

This invoice displays the final amount that you will have paid your rental company in the event of an accident, once the final charges have been settled.

If you are having difficulty obtaining this document we recommend that you call your rental company as they can be slow responding to emails.

If you purchased your policy directly from RentalCover.com, unfortunately once your rental period has started it is not possible to cancel your cover. You can however extend or shorten your policy. To do this just visit My Account. To login, you will need your booking reference number which ends with "-INS", it can be found in the subject line of your confirmation email.

We understand that even the best made plans sometimes change, which is why you can cancel your RentalCover.com policy up to the time of pick-up to receive a full refund.

To cancel, extend or shorten your cover please follow these steps:

1. Visit My Account.

2. Next login. To do this you will need your booking reference number which ends with “-INS”, this can be found in the subject line of your confirmation email.

3. Lastly, choose your policy and select either Edit Cover or Cancel. We will then immediately process your refund. Please note that most international transfers complete within one to four business days.

Please note that your RentalCover.com policy can be used for any rental vehicle, from any rental company, subject to the terms of the rental agreement. You don’t need to change your policy.

To shorten or extend your policy please follow these steps:

1. Visit My Account.

2. Next login. To do this you will need your booking reference number which ends with “-INS”, this can be found in the subject line of your confirmation email.

3. Lastly, choose your policy and select Edit Cover. If you reduced the number of days we will refund you the difference to your original payment card. If you are extending your dates you will just need to pay the additional amount.

Good news. You don’t need to change your policy.

Your RentalCover.com policy can be used for any rental vehicle, from any rental company, subject to the terms of the rental agreement.

The nominated driver and all additional drivers included on your rental agreement are covered by your RentalCover.com policy. There is no need to add any additional drivers to your policy; they are automatically covered free of charge.

Thinking of visiting other countries on your trip? Your policy also includes coverage for any additional countries that you visit in the same rental vehicle, as long as the vehicle was collected from your nominated country of pick-up.

You do not need to inform RentalCover.com of additional drivers or countries you are visiting.

2. Fill in the blanks

Already provided us with all required documents? If so you can skip to step three. If a document is missing or our team need more information we will contact you within 48 hours after your claim was submitted. Good news though, 98% of claims get approved upon first submission.

3. Let’s approve your claim

On average our team approve claims within three days. After your claim has been approved we’ll send you an email with a link for you to securely enter your preferred payment bank details.

4. Let’s get paid

After you have entered your bank details we immediately transfer the funds in your chosen currency. Several factors outside of our control now influence the time it takes for these funds to show in your account. However, most international transfers complete within one to four business days.

Unfortunately, transaction fees are everywhere when you travel internationally. In this article we share tips for how you can avoid these fees.

One major cost that most travellers don’t plan for are potential charges from the rental company in the event of an accident or damage. Those fees can cost in excess of $3000 and credit card issuers typically charge 4-5% in additional fees for international travellers.

When you make a claim with RentalCover.com there are two factors that can explain the difference between the amount you paid for your damages and the final claim amount you receive.

1. Additional credit card fees: When you make a claim RentalCover.com will refund the charges you received from the rental company, but we do not refund any additional international transaction fees you might incur.

2. International money transfers: Our payment technology allows your claim to be paid into any bank in the world, with no additional fees. While we waive the fees that banks charge for sending payments and wherever we can we waive the fees charged by your bank for receiving payment, (these normally both cost between 10-20 USD per transaction), we take these fees into account when calculating the exchange rates that you see at the time of payment.
