We understand that insurance, and especially insurance acronyms, can be confusing! In this short article we help demystify the various products that help minimize your costs if there are damages:
CDW (or Loss Damage Waiver, which adds theft protection) is usually included in the rental rate that you see on a website. Note that these “waivers” just reduce your risk from a high amount (similar to the full value of the car) to somewhere below $7,500 depending on the car and the rental company.
✗ If there are damages and you DON’T have CDW
You may be responsible for the full replacement cost of the rental vehicle. For more information please read our country specific Rental Guide.
✓ If there are damages and you DO have CDW
You may be responsible for the “deductible” (called “excess” outside of the US) that applies to your rental vehicle. It can be as high as $7,500. A separate product called Super Collision Damage Waiver (SCDW) is sold by rental companies to cover this amount. RentalCover.com plans are designed to do the same thing, for up to 50% cheaper than the rental companies’ SCDW. For more information please read our country specific Rental Guide.
SCDW waives the deductible/excess that’s payable if you have CDW. RentalCover.com plans are designed to do the same thing, for up to 50% cheaper than the rental companies’ SCDW.
✗ If there are damages and you DON’T have SCDW or a RentalCover.com policy
RentalCover.com plans are an alternative to SCDW however they are up to 50% cheaper. If the unfortunate happens and you do have an accident while renting a vehicle and you do not have one of these policies, the amount you pay will be determined by what you may have purchased at the rental desk.
✓ If there are damages and you DO have RentalCover.com
Well done! You have saved up to 50% versus SCDW and our award-winning claims system will ensure approved claims are paid quickly.
