Choose your vehicle

Car

This includes cover for vehicles with fewer than nine seats, including the driver’s seat. If you are planning on driving on unsealed roads in accordance with the permissions set out in your rental agreement, add 4x4 cover via the My Account page. 

Our policies do not cover supercars, high end sports and luxury vehicles (including but not limited to, those made by Ferrari, Porsche, Lamborghini, Aston Martin and Bentley), classic cars and cars where the intention of the rental includes use at race tracks or for other special events.

4x4

Going off road? Then select this policy. It covers you for any vehicle that you plan to drive on unsealed roads in accordance with the permissions set out in your rental agreement. The 4x4 policy can be purchased for 4x4s, and added via the My Account page to campervan and motorhome policies.

Adding a tent on top of your 4x4? First select Camper Van as the vehicle type. From the bottom of the quote page then add “4x4” as a vehicle type and you will be covered. 

Campervan

Does it have two or more in-built sleeping berths and no in-built shower or toilet? If so it’s a campervan. If you are planning on driving on unsealed roads in accordance with the permissions set out in your rental agreement, add 4x4 cover via the My Account page.

Motorhome / RV

Select this if your vehicle has a built-in shower and / or toilet. If you are planning on driving on unsealed roads in accordance with the permissions set out in your rental agreement, add 4x4 cover via the My Account page.

Minibus

Group trip? Select minibus if your vehicle has between nine and 14 seats, including the driver’s seat.

 van Van 

A van has no more than three seats at the front with no in-built sleeping berths, shower or toilet. We can cover vans that are not used for commercial use and don’t need a special license to be driven.

If you are told by the rental company that they “don’t recognise” your RentalCover.com policy, don’t worry: They don’t need to! Our policies are an independent alternative to the rental company’s waivers and they are valid worldwide. They have no hidden exclusions and are 50% cheaper than the rental company’s waivers. If your rental company refuses to give you a vehicle we recommend speaking to your rental booking agent.

2. Be prepared

Have all required documents ready for your check-in and take a look at your country’s Rental Guide so you know what to expect at the rental desk.

3. Be confident

We understand that insurance, and especially insurance acronyms, can be confusing! In this short article we demystify the two most commonly used terms you will hear at the rental desk:

Excess / deductible

This is the maximum you will pay for a claim before your Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) comes into play. In the event of an accident you are liable to pay up to the full excess deductible amount, and your CDW insurance will pay the rest. For example, if your car is worth $10000 and your excess deductible is capped at $3000, you would pay up to $3000 and the rental company’s insurance would pay the rest. You can purchase additional protection from RentalCover.com which reduces your excess / deductible costs to $0.

Collision Damage Waiver (CDW)

CDW and LDW is usually included in the rental rate that you see on a website. Note that these “waivers” just reduce your risk from a high amount (similar to the full value of the car) to somewhere between $1500 and $3000 depending on the car and the rental company.

✗ Without CDW

If you have an accident you may be responsible for the full cost of your rental, in additional to any towing and administrative charges incurred due to loss of use while the vehicle is off the road.

✓ With CDW

If you have an accident you will only pay up to the deductible excess amount on the vehicle. Many rental company CDW policies typically exclude windscreen and tyre repairs/replacements, as well as undercarriage, roof, interior, window and side mirror damages. However, if you have purchased RentalCover.com’s Full Cover product we not only reduce your excess deductible to $0, but also include protection for all the items that these policies don’t protect you for.

We understand that insurance, and especially insurance acronyms, can be confusing! In this short glossary we demystify the more commonly used terms you will hear used at the rental desk:

CDW protects you from sky high costs in the case of an accident, theft or damage being caused to your vehicle. If you have this insurance the rental company will waive their right to collect the full cost of the damage and repairs from you (similar to the full value of the car) to somewhere between €/$/£1500 & €/$/£3000 depending on the car and the rental company. You can purchase additional protection from RentalCover.com which reduces your excess / deductible costs to $0.

This is the fee imposed on the customer by the rental company to cover any loss of income incurred while the vehicle is being repaired.

Sometimes referred to as deductible excess protection or waiver, this is a supplemental policy to CDW, and is available from RentalCover.com. If you have this insurance we will take on the responsibility for refunding your deductible excess in the event that you need to make a claim, effectively reducing the amount to $0. All RentalCover.com policies include zero excess as standard.

2. Confirm the start and end dates for your trip, and then select the vehicle you plan to rent; car is always selected by default (if you are unsure about vehicle types read this short guide).

3. Lastly click “Get a quote” to retrieve your personal quote. You can review the details and complete your booking by entering your payment details.

The quote page displays the trip price and all the important information you need to know before you set off, including any inclusions and exclusions. You can also review your insurance policy before you buy.

Please ensure that the policy holder’s name is the same as the main driver on your vehicle rental agreement.

You can change or update the policy holder’s personal details at any time from the Profile section in your account.

2. Next sign in. To do this you will need the email you used to create your original quote and your booking reference number which ends with "-INS", this can be found in the subject line of your confirmation email.

3. Select Profile from the left hand menu. From this page you can amend the name, age, address or contact email of the policy holder. You can also add your company name on the invoice. Please note that our invoices cannot be used for tax purposes because we don't charge VAT. 

4. Make sure to click update once you finished amending your details to save your changes. You can now download your amended invoice from your My Account page.
 
Please ensure that the policy holder’s name is the same as the main driver on your vehicle rental agreement.

You can check the status of your policy at any time by accessing your account.

From your profile you can also amend the policy holder’s personal information and add your company name on the invoice.

Here's what you need to know if you're planning a longer trip where you might be hiring more than one rental vehicle:

Multiple rentals in the same country

Your policy includes cover for rentals within your destination country as long as:

Your rentals are consecutive, with no more than two days between them
If you need to rent a car from the 2nd - 3rd of June and another car from the 6th - 7th of June you can use a single policy, though you may find it is cheaper to buy two policies. Buying two policies will ensure you avoid paying for the two days between rentals when you will not need coverage.

The main driver is the same for all the rentals
Make sure the nominated driver's name on your rental agreement matches the name on your RentalCover.com policy. It's an easy thing to overlook if you're renting multiple vehicles on your trip. Additional drivers nominated on your rental agreement are automatically covered.

The vehicle type doesn’t change
Hiring a car and then a campervan? You will need a new policy for each vehicle type you hire. Learn more about vehicle types.
 

Multiple car rentals in different countries

Planning a border crossing road trip? The same rules as above apply. The majority of our policies include cover for additional countries as long as your vehicle was collected from the nominated country of pick-up and this is in accordance with the permissions set out in your rental agreement. Please also check your policy before you travel for the full list of countries included in your cover.

If your rental has started and you realise you forgot to buy insurance, don’t worry, you still can.  

Our insurance is calculated per calendar day and your cover is live from the moment you purchased it onwards. For example, if you bought your insurance at 11am, you will be covered for the rest of the day but not for anything that happened prior to that time. Claims for any prior damages or incidents will not be approved.

If you purchased your policy directly from RentalCover.com, unfortunately once your rental period has started it is not possible to cancel your cover. You can however extend or shorten your policy. To cancel, extend or shorten your cover please follow these steps:

3. Lastly, choose your policy and select either Extend / Reduce Cover dates or Cancel. We will then immediately process your refund. Please note that most international transfers complete within one to four business days.

To shorten or extend your policy please follow these steps:

2. Next login. To do this you will need your booking reference number which ends with “-INS”, this can be found in the subject line of your confirmation email.

3. Lastly, choose your policy and select Extend / Reduce Cover dates. If you reduced the number of days we will refund you the difference to your original payment card. If you are extending your dates you will just need to pay the additional amount.

Good news. You don’t need to change your policy.

Your RentalCover.com policy can be used for any rental vehicle, from any rental company, subject to the terms of the rental agreement.

The nominated driver and all additional drivers included on your rental agreement are covered by your RentalCover.com policy. There is no need to add any additional drivers to your policy; they are automatically covered free of charge. Make sure the nominated driver's name on your rental agreement matches the name on your RentalCover.com policy.

Thinking of visiting other countries on your trip? The majority of our policies include cover for additional countries as long as your vehicle was collected from the nominated country of pick-up and this is in accordance with the permissions set out in your rental agreement. Please also check your policy before you travel for the full list of countries included in your cover.

You do not need to inform RentalCover.com of additional drivers or countries you are visiting.

Renting more than one vehicle at the same time? Each vehicle must have its own individual policy since your policy only covers a single vehicle at a time.

95% of claims are approved within three business days. This is the standard refund window for RentalCover.com. It can take longer if documents are missing so please provide the documents at the outset. Once approved you will receive an email that includes a link to a payment form where you will enter your bank account details. Payment will be issued immediately however it can take several days to settle depending on your bank country.

Unfortunately, transaction fees are everywhere when you travel internationally. In this article we share tips for how you can avoid these fees.

One major cost that most travellers don’t plan for are potential charges from the rental company in the event of an accident or damage. Those fees can cost in excess of $3000 and credit card issuers typically charge 4-5% in additional fees for international travellers.

Before you travel check the cost of using your credit or debit card overseas. To avoid costly card fees we recommend that you use prepaid travel cards
 

When you make a claim with RentalCover.com there are two factors that can explain the difference between the amount you paid for your damages and the final claim amount you receive.

1. Additional credit card fees: When you make a claim RentalCover.com will refund the charges you received from the rental company, but we do not refund any additional international transaction fees you might incur.

2. International money transfers: Our payment technology allows your claim to be paid into any bank in the world, with no additional fees. While we waive the fees that banks charge for sending payments and wherever we can we waive the fees charged by your bank for receiving payment, (these normally both cost between 10-20 USD per transaction), we take these fees into account when calculating the exchange rates that you see at the time of payment.

Rental Cover - Rental insurance at the best price

Cancelled your cover but can’t see the money back in your account? That might be due to one of the following scenarios:

1. Your refund is being processed
After you have cancelled your cover, a refund will automatically be issued. 2. Your payment was never taken (so no refund is required)
If you cancelled your policy shortly after you purchased it a reversal process will be triggered.
Your transaction will appear as pending on your credit card statement, and the money will be temporarily blocked, but the payment will not leave your account. This pending transaction will disappear from your statement within 3 to 5 working days and you will not be charged by RentalCover.com.

If your transaction is still pending after 5 working days, please contact your bank for more information.
 
It is not possible to update your payment method or currency after your policy is purchased.

We will not be able to refund your premium after your rental period is complete, even if you did not have an accident.

When you buy our policy you agree to pay a small non refundable fee in exchange of us taking a big risk off your shoulders, and although luck is good, having insurance is better.

We are here to provide you with protection for when things go wrong. Read this article to find out what is included in your cover.

We sometimes hear of rental companies charging customers for damages that did not happen, inflating or miscalculating the final charges. If this has happened to you, you should lodge a “dispute” with your credit card issuer for this unauthorised transaction.

To save time lodging your dispute please follow the instructions below:

1. Download our template letter PDF icon and fill in your details

2. Contact your credit card issuer and use your letter to lodge a dispute for the final transaction you were charged by the rental company. It is best not to explicitly request a refund as your bank may defer you to contact the rental company directly to contest the charge. Instead we advise you state that “the charge was unauthorised” since you do not recognise the damage

What happens next? You can expect a response within 1-2 weeks, and for the charge to be reversed within 3-4 weeks. Our customers have a 95% success rate with these requests, however if your request is unsuccessful, or if you have some excess charges remaining after the dispute is settled, please start a claim online with us here and we will review your case as soon as possible.
