What is Theft Protection?

All RentalCover.com policies provide coverage for theft, fire and vandalism. Most rental companies will offer you a product called "Theft Protection" either online or at the rental desk, which insures you up to a fixed amount for loss and damage in the case that your rental car is stolen. This will generally be offered as a standalone product in the US and parts of Europe, or as an inclusion in a "premium" coverage product in Australia, NZ and the rest of Europe.

Some rental companies also include Theft Protection with your CDW purchase, in which case the policy is known as a Loss Damage Waiver (LDW). You will need to check your policy wording or contact your policy supplier to find out exactly what is included in your coverage.

Note: Rental companies sometimes refuse claims because "insufficient precautions" were taken to prevent theft. It's always important to check the terms of your policy and be careful!

Example

Regular RentalCover.com customer Paul McCartney has hired a yellow Subaru to go driving around the Isle of Man.

He trots off for a pint singing "we all live in a yellow Subaru, a yellow Subaru, a yellow Subaru". But he leaves his car unattended in a carpark for an hour, an opportunistic thief hotwires the vehicle and makes off with Sir Paul's yellow Subaru rental, along with some vinyl records of some unreleased songs from Abbey Road Studios.

Fortunately Paul was prepared for this scenario because he purchased a RentalCover.com policy (they always provide coverage for theft, as Sir Paul knows). While his policy unfortunately didn't provide coverage for the lost vinyls, he got to make a claim for the cost of the stolen car and returned a week later in a much less identifiable Rolls Royce Silver Shadow.
